What is a Salamander?

In numerous mythologies and folklores, the humble lizard known as the salamander has forged a profound connection with the element of fire. These creatures are frequently seen as living embodiments of flames, symbolizing the dual nature of this element—both destructive and life-sustaining. The very name "salamander" can be traced back to the Persian word "سَمَنْدَر‎ • (samandar)," which referred to a mythological fire-dwelling entity that would perish if separated from the fiery embrace. In the ancient Greek belief, they were born from the very essence of fire and could endure even the most blistering infernos. It's said that these salamanders were often witnessed emerging from beneath the fire as logs were added to a pyre, solidifying the association with flames. This belief became so ingrained that the name Salamander endured, reluctantly adopted by Paracelsus when he expanded on the concept of fire elementals.

So while there is a small lizard named the fire salamander, it is separate from the true elemental beings who live among the flames. Their lives are bright, passionate, and brief. They bring life and warmth, but also death and destruction. Powerful elementals with capricious natures which we often stand before in awe, spectators of their mesmerising dance.
